I am trying to find the Goodge family by investigating the following comments written by William H. Bryan in the 1930's:
"It is stated by a grandchild that the mother of the late Vice President Henricks and Grandmother Mary Goodge Bryan were
cousins. And by another relative it is stated that Mary Goodge Bryan was a niece of Martha Washington, wife of our first
President. Which side of Martha Washington's family is not stated. The encyclopedia of the history of the families mentioned
were available to almost every one to consult."
Current Analysis
I think it is possible that the relationship claim has some merit. V.P. Henricks's mother, Jane Thomson was born in Franklin, PA on Oct. 7, 1793. 'Cousin' usually implies the child of one of your parent's siblings. Jane's father, Archibald Thomson, was one of 15 children raised in Franklin, PA (about 75 miles from Uniontown). Jane's mother, Ann Andrews is also to have been from Franklin. I would assume that she also had siblings, but cannot document them yet.
On her father's side, Jane had at least 15 documented cousins in Pittsburg which is just 45 miles from Uniontown where the Goodge family settled. On Jane's mother's side, there are documented Andrew's in Bullskin and Mt. Plesant which are both close to Uniontown as well. Also, there is a theory that the Goodge family might have actually been Goode.
